Originally from Drouin, Leon Rice made his VFL debut for Hawthorn in 1970 and soon established himself as a first choice senior player. Mainly used as a wingman, that was the position he occupied in the Hawks’ 1971 grand final winning team. Five years later he was a reserve when Hawthorn next went top.

When he left the Hawks at the end of the 1979 season Rice had played 133 VFL games and kicked 26 goals for the club. He then captain-coached VFA side Camberwell and was at the helm when they won the 1981 second division grand final against Waverley. After retiring as a player he served as a Hawthorn board member for a time.
