Given that he was fair-haired, Les Bagnell inevitably attracted the nickname ‘Snowy’. Originally from Leeton, he played rugby league as a youngster, but came to prefer the Australian game, in which he eked out a 10 season (1924-33) career with Newtown.
An extremely quick and nimble wingman, a feature of his game was his pin-point stab passing. A regular representative player, his state appearances included a couple of games for New South Wales at the 1933 Sydney carnival.
Newtown was the pre-eminent force in Sydney football during Snowy Bagnell’s career, contesting no fewer than eight premiership-deciding matches for five victories.
