Les Hill may not have been in the very highest rank as a player but any footballer who plays in excess of 50 VFL games is worthy of commendation. Hill, who began his senior football with Carlton Brewery, actually played 67 games of league football, comprised of 13 with Collingwood in 1939-40, 52 for Fitzroy from 1941 to 1944 and a couple with North Melbourne in 1947. He never represented his state, or polled well in the Brownlow Medal, or won a club best and fairest or played in a premiership, but he achieved something most of us can only dream of - played Australian football at its elite level.
