Andrew MacNish made his senior WAFL debut with Subiaco in 1985 and soon established himself as a key player. In 1986, aged just 20, he played state of origin football, and was selected in the All Australian team. At the end of the year he contributed to Subi’s grand final trouncing of East Fremantle, kicking three goals and being named among his team’s best players.

West Coast drafted MacNish in their inaugural VFL squad and he made his debut in the opening round of the 1987 season against Richmond. He did well, booting three goals, but in the longer term failed fully to build on this initial promise. Between 1987 and 1989 he played just 20 games for the Eagles, although it should be pointed out that he missed many games through injury, including every game in the 1988 season.

De-listed by West Coast after the 1989 season he continued in the WAFL with Subiaco before being taken by Geelong in the 1992 mid-season draft. He played just three AFL games for the Cats towards the end of the year and was not retained, whereupon he returned to Subiaco. He continued with the Lions for four more seasons, and when he retired he had played a total of 195 WA(S)FL matches for the club, kicking 345 goals. The highlight of his career with Subi, apart from playing in the 1986 grand final-winning team, was claiming the club’s 1991 fairest and best award.
