Originally drafted alongside his twin brother Steven in 1986, Matthew Febey would wait much longer than his sibling to finally don the “red and the blue” senior jumper. While Steven took the field in early 1988, it would be another four and a half years before Matthew joined him in the team. During that time, Matthew was delisted, redrafted in the 1989 pre-season draft and delisted again. During that period, Febey spent time at several clubs, AFL, VFL and suburban before it proved to a case of “third time lucky” in 1992.

Taken in that year’s mid-season draft, Matthew Febey joined his brother in making his debut in round 15 of that season. Once he had done so, he did not look back, playing all remaining matches in that year and 18 of a possible 22 in 1993, establishing himself on a wing.

He became a virtual ever-present member of the side from then on, participating in the 1994 and 1998 finals series. Hamstring and finger injuries caught up with him in 2000, however, restricting him to just two games, and he watched from the sidelines as the Demons made it all the way to that year’s Grand Final against Essendon. Febey opted to retire after that, having played 143 AFL games, 115 fewer than his twin brother’s eventual total.
