After a couple of seasons with Preston in the VFA Maurie Dunstan joined Collingwood in 1949. His experience with the Bullants stood him in good stead and, after overcoming the early handicap of an eye injury sustained in training, found a regular place in the team as its centre half forward. He gave solid service to the Magpies although he was quite frequently sidelined with injury or illness. A case in point was the 1953 grand final in which Collingwood downed Geelong; Dunstan had appendicitis, and his place in the side went to Terry Waites, who had only previously played half a dozen games. Over the course of his career he suffered breaks to his ribs, ankle, hands and toe.
Maurie Dunstan retired at the end of the 1954 season having played 72 VFL games and booted 118 goals. He was the Magpies’ top goal kicker in 1951 with 40 goals and 1952 with 43, despite missing large portions of each season because of injury.
