Jim McAllester was a hard working utility capable of playing as a forward, a defender or even, on occasion, in the ruck. He joined Essendon in 1980 from Moonee Imperials, but was only selected for senior duty twice, spending the majority of time on the bench and failing to record a single possession. He fared rather better at Footscray, where he played 24 VFL games and scored four goals in 1981-2. He then spent the 1983 season playing for East Ballarat, where he produced a string of impressive performances, eliciting interest from Collingwood, which was where he ended up in 1984. In many ways it proved to be the most memorable season of his career as he produced a number of telling performances, including a game against Sydney when he bagged a match-winning tally of seven goals. His time in the sun was fleeting, however, and after just 10 games and 18 goals for the Magpies his VFL career was over.
