Winner of the 1994 Hunter Harrison Medal for best and fairest player in division two of the Teal Cup, midfielder Mick Martin was not surprisingly highly rated at that year’s National Draft, and he ended up being taken with the Footscray Football Club’s first selection. He made his AFL debut, aged 18, in round eight of the 1995 season, but struggled thereafter to retain his spot. He finally hit his straps in 1998 when he played every game for the year, including the Bulldogs’ two finals. However, after once again struggling to achieve selection in 1999 he was traded to Brisbane, where he started promisingly only to succumb to osteitis pubis midway through the 2000 season. He had played 10 of the Lions’ first 12 matches without kicking a goal. The Bulldogs phase of his career had seen him play 48 games and score 18 goals.
