Michael Pickering produced some excellent football for Richmond between 1984 and 1991 during which he played 136 games and kicked 160 goals. His greatest asset was his superb high marking which sometimes required him to show great courage. Although not the quickest of players he covered a lot of ground during a match and relished being in the thick of the action. Moreover, he boasted good evasive skills. He won the Tigers’ best and fairest award in 1988, ran second in 1987 and third in 1985.

In 1991 he fell out of favour at Punt Road and crossed to Melbourne where he added a final 15 AFL games and kicked 12 goals over the course of two injury-affected seasons. His last game in a Demons jumper was the 1993 reserves grand final which Melbourne won.
