Michael Wakelin was a physically strong key position player who was very hard to beat in the air. In part this was attributable to his upper body strength, but he was also capable of leaping higher than most opponents. His career with Central District ran from 1992 to 1999 as well as in 2001, and he was unfortunate to retire just as the Bulldogs’ halcyon decade was getting underway. The closest he got to enjoying premiership success was playing in back to back grand final losses against Port Adelaide in 1995-6.
