The archetypal rugged, uncompromising defender, Pat Kelly played 104 VFL games for North Melbourne, mainly in a back pocket, in 1945, and from 1948 to 1955. Almost fearsomely intense in his approach to the game, he improved as a player as his career went on, and he acquired greater confidence in his skills. Kelly was a member of North's losing Grand Final team of 1950 against Essendon. He developed a great understanding with full back John McCorkell, whose relentlessly physical approach to the game mirrored Kelly's own.
