Originally from Warrnambool, Percy Martyn commenced his senior football career with Inglewood in 1909 and played in a winning grand final side the following year. The 1912 season saw him at St Kilda where he played nine VFL games and booted 11 goals, before crossing to Richmond. Playing mainly as a forward he was a prolific goal kicker with his tally of 32 in 1913 enabling him to head the club’s goal kicking list for the year. He was the first Richmond player to kick in excess of 30 goals in a VFL season.
After 21 games and 50 goals in two seasons with the Wasps Martini transferred to Essendon who utilised him primarily as a defender, a role in which he revelled. In 1915 and from 1918 to 1921 he made 43 senior appearances and registered seven goals. He was selected for Victoria in 1920 and played for a VFL representative team against Ballarat in 1920.
The next phase of Percy Martyn’s career saw him in Tasmania, where he captain-coached North Launceston as far as a grand final in 1922. He then undertook spells in the same role at North Hobart (1923) and Devonport (1924) before returning to Victoria. He continued playing in various country leagues and associations until 1939, by which point he was forty-seven years of age.
