Having played in his home state of Tasmania both for St Virgil’s College and TANFL club North Hobart Peter Johnston was recruited by Melbourne, where he proved a serviceable acquisition, although he was never an automatic selection for the seniors. From 1976 to 1978 he played 30 VFL games for the Demons and scored 36 goals, including 31 in his last season. His next port of call was Geelong where, on the whole, he performed somewhat more impressively than during his time with Melbourne. However, his kicking for goal sometimes left a lot to be desired. Between 1979 and 1986 he made 92 senior appearances for the Cats and booted 108 goals, plus a substantial, though unrecorded, number of behinds.
