Phil Gilbert was a handy defender who enjoyed a varied career. The majority of that career was spent with Claremont, for whom he played 61 games and registered 26 goals in 1988, 1991-2 and 1995-6. He was a member of the Tigers’ 1991 and 1996 premiership-winning teams. In 1993 he embarked on an AFL career with Melbourne, but after a solid first season his form fell away and, having played just 25 games and six goals in two years he was traded to Fremantle. Once again, however, he failed to find his best form, and after two seasons which yielded 14 appearances and two goals he was de-listed.

The final phase of Gilbert’s career was spent as inaugural captain of Westar Rules newcomers Peel Thunder in 1997-8, but injuries restricted him to just 11 games and three goals. He later returned to the club as assistant coach to Garry Hocking.
