Hawthorn recruited Phil Hay from Trinity Presbyterians where he had played mainly as a forward or ruck-rover. The Hawks, however, transformed him into an outstanding full back. Despite only standing 180cm and weighing 79.5kg he was able to compete successfully with bigger, stronger opponents by a combination of great anticipation and manoeuvrability. He was also a superb kick. Nineteenth man in Hawthorn's 1961 premiership team he played at full back two years later when the Hawks lost the grand final to Geelong. He enjoyed a superb 1964 season which saw him finish as runner-up in the Brownlow. Between 1960 and 1966 Phil Hay played a total of 107 VFL games and kicked 20 goals.
