A genuinely two-sided player who boasted excellent all round skills Hawthorn's Ray Jencke debuted in 1986 before becoming a regular senior player the following year when his outstanding form won him a place in Victoria's state of origin team. After playing in the Hawks' losing grand final side of 1987 his progress was interrupted when he injured a knee, and he did not regain his place in the team until 1990. A year later he had the satisfaction of helping the Hawks to an emphatic 53 point grand final victory o ver West Coast. Playing in his usual position of half back flank he garnered 16 possessions whilst keeping his direct opponent Chris Waterman to half that number and no score whatsoever. Not surprisingly he was listed high among his team's best players.
Jencke continued in the brown and gold until 1997 by which time he had played 194 V/AFL games for the club and kicked 27 goals.
