Having played in Melbourne’s 1935 seconds premiership-winning team Richie Emselle took his senior bows two years later before becoming a regular League player in 1938. A solid and reliable defender, he played in the back pocket in Melbourne’s 1939, 1940 and 1941 grand final-winning sides, earning prominent mention in dispatches after the last of these triumphs.

Emselle continued to perform creditably for the Demons until 1943 when persistent knee problems restricted him to just four appearances for the year. He retired at season’s end after totalling 92 VFL games and seven goals in the famous navy and red.
