Used as a half back flanker early in his time with Carlton, Richie Green really came into his own when tried in a back pocket midway through his second season. Originally from East Brunswick, he played half a dozen games for the Blues in his debut year of 1946 before developing into a regular senior player from 1947. In that year’s grand final win over Essendon he was one of Carlton’s best players.

One of the keys to Green’s success was the close, almost telepathic partnership he enjoyed with champion full back Ollie Grieve. This pairing was still to the fore in 1949 as Carlton again qualified to meet Essendon on grand final day. Once again Green was one of the Blues’ best performers but he could not prevent a humiliating 73 point loss.

The Carlton phase of Richie Green’s career saw him play 95 VFL games and kick one goal between 1946 and 1952. An attempt to extend his playing life at South Melbourne in 1953 faltered after just a couple of appearances.
