Just like his younger brother Stephe, Rod MacPherson commenced his senior football with Clarence before progressing to the VFL with Footscray. Both brothers debuted for the Bulldogs in 1982, although not in the same match. Of compact build, he was highly adaptable and capable of assuming a number of roles, but he never managed to play more than 11 games in a season in compiling a career record of 50 VFL appearances in half a dozen campaigns. The last seven of those appearances were with Brisbane, where he transferred in 1987. He booted 24 goals with the Bulldogs and three for the Bears.
