Carlton’s Rod McLean was a robust, resilient ruckman who was protective of his team’s smaller players and did not let the niceties of the game interfere with his effectiveness. Originally from Fawkner, he played 128 VFL games and kicked 33 goals for the Blues between 1935 and 1942 and from 1944 to 1946. Among his appearances were the winning grand finals of 1938 and 1945. Rod McLean’s son Rod ‘Ricky’ McLean played VFL football in the 1960s and 1970s for Carlton and Richmond.
