Ross Capes was the highest profile and, by popular consent, the finest West Australian umpire of the 1970s. His career, which saw him umpire a total of 275 senior WANFL games over the period 1971-1982, witnessed the seminal changeover from the single to dual umpire system.
Capes umpired Grand Finals under both systems, and a total of eight in all, including seven in a row from 1973 to 1979. He also umpired numerous interstate matches, and after retirement served as the WAFL umpires coach..
