Syd Slater played his early football with Essendon as a forward before converting to defence. He was physically very strong and did not mind throwing his weight around. During his time with the Dons he alternated quite frequently between seniors and seconds, and he won a best and fairest award in the latter grade in 1938. After 33 VFL games and 14 goals with Essendon from 1935 to 1939 he moved to North Melbourne where he endured a similarly up and down existence, playing just 39 senior games in six seasons. After the war he rounded off his playing career with a stint at VFA side Brunswick.
