Very little is known about the life of Stanley ‘Sailor’ Malin other than that he played two seasons of senior football with Port Adelaide, and was the winner, in 1899, of the second ever Magarey Medal. It seems he played mainly across the centre or half forward lines, and was, according to his school newspaper, a “good mark and very straight kick”. In 1900 he quit football and travelled to Sydney to embark on a programme of medical studies at the city’s university. Tragically, he was to die, aged just 25, in December 1903, after a brief illness.
