Stan Scrutton played 72 league games for Sturt in 1919 and 1920 and between 1922 and 1926, booting 19 goals. He was one of several Blues players to miss the 1921 season after pledging allegiance to the losing faction during the internal turmoil that beset the club in the first couple of seasons after World War I.

When Scrutton resumed his league career in 1922, he was joined in the Sturt side by younger brothers Clarrie and Gordon who would both go on to help the club to the 1926 premiership. Stan Scrutton, however, had as good as retired by that point, although he did have the consolation of having helped the Blues to victory against North Adelaide in the 1919 Challenge Final. In addition to his club football, Scrutton represented South Australia twice. A redoubtable follower and half forward, he teamed particularly well with younger brother Gordon who was a highly capable rover.
