A strong, hard as nails defender and utility who relished the physical aspects of the game, Stan Thomas joined Geelong from Barwon and made his VFL debut in 1915. Boasting plenty of stamina and a good turn in pace - his nickname was ‘Dasher’ - he was the quintessential team player, unspectacular but highly effective.

After missing the entire 1916 seasons because Geelong was temporarily in recess, Thomas resumed his league career in 1917 and continued until midway through the 1925 season by which time he had played 137 VFL games and kicked 6 goals. He was effectively forced into retirement after receiving a twenty-six game suspension for his part in an all-in brawl which marred the North Melbourne-Geelong match on 1st August 1925.
