Steven Sziller debuted with Woodville West Torrens in 1992 and the last of his 72 games for the club was the victorious grand final of 1994, when he was awarded the Jack Oatey Medal for the best player on the ground. Between 1995 and 2000 he played 118 AFL games and kicked 38 goals for St Kilda, stamping himself as one of the competition's leading taggers. At the end of a 2000 season which had seen him finish equal seventh in the club's best and fairest he was somewhat surprisingly de-listed, only for former Saints team mate Danny Frawley, then coach of Richmond, to offer him a lifeline in the shape of a place on the Saints' list. Sziller repaid his erstwhile club-mate with two highly effective seasons during which he played a final 38 AFL games and kicked 3 goals. After leaving the Tigers he played at East Burwood Rams in the Eastern Football League, and subsequently at St Paul's in the Southern Football League.
Stephen Sziller's brother Jason played alongside him at Woodville West Torrens from 1992 to 1994 and had played a total of 110 games for the club by the time he retired in 1998.
