British-born Tom Power was one of the leading ‘second generation’ pioneers of the game through his involvement with Carlton, where he was a founder, player, treasurer, and secretary for many years, and the inaugural treasurer of the VFA. He was also the editor and driving force behind ‘The Footballer’ (1875-81), the first dedicated football publication. It was said of him that ‘he was the brains of the game in those days, and was always on the lookout for opportunities of advantageously amending the code’.
