Tony Symonds was a thinly built wingman and half forward flanker who endured some injury setbacks but overall was a better than competent league footballer for more than a decade. Glenelg recruited him from Sacred Heart College and he played a total of 225 senior games for the club from 1981 to 1986 and between 1988 and 1992. He spent the 1987 season with Hawthorn where he was restricted to just three games because of injury.
Symonds' twin career highlights came in 1985 and 1986 when he helped the Bays to back to back Grand Final triumphs over North Adelaide. He lined up on a wing and ranked high in his team's best players in both years. Symonds, who made one interstate appearance for South Australia, was non-playing coach of Glenelg in 1995 and 1996, but the side finished a disappointing seventh in both seasons.
