A left footed rover or wingman of great alacrity, skill and poise, Trent Nichols commenced with Sandy Bay in the TFL in 1986 before being recruited by Richmond. Whilst in Tasmania he had played for the state’s Teal Cup side and achieved selection in the All Australian team. Later, he would play senior state of origin football for Tasmania on a couple of occasions.

Nicholls had two separate stints at Richmond. During the first, between 1988 and 1991, he produced many eye catching performances and was runner-up in the club’s 1990 best and fairest count. Just a year later, however, he was traded to West Coast where he endured a dismal time, playing just 4 games in 1992 and none whatsoever the next year. When not selected by the Eagles he played for East Fremantle and was a member of that club’s 1992 WAFL premiership team. He played 18 games for the Sharks and kicked 17 goals.

From 1994 to 1996 he played 33 AFL games and kicked 39 goals for North Melbourne before returning for a second stint with Richmond and taking his final tally of games with that club to 75 and the number of goals kicked to 65.
