Trevor Johnson joined Melbourne in 1953 but missed the year as he was required to undertake National Service. After debuting with the reserves in 1954 he took his bows in the seniors the following year. He enjoyed a fine debut season and was awarded the best first year player trophy. A member of VFL premiership teams in 1955-6-7 and 1960 he was initially used in a back pocket but by 1957 had been transformed into a centre half forward. Towards the end of his career he returned to the back pocket. Nicknamed 'Phantom' because of his smooth, imperturbable style of play he played 118 VFL games and kicked 9 goals for the Demons between 1955 and 1962.

After leaving Melbourne Trevor Johnson had stints as captain-coach of his original club Epping in the Diamond Valley Football League and Port Fairy in the Hampden Football League.
