Trevor Poole arrived at Richmond in 1981 and made his way up through the ranks, eventually making his senior debut in 1984. A half back flanker or wingman he was a strong mark who kicked well on the run and boasted an abundance of skill. He won the Tigers best and fairest award in 1985, the same season which saw him represent Victoria twice. He enjoyed another good year in 1986, running third in the club champion count, but thereafter his form tapered as he seemingly lost his enthusiasm for the game.

After crossing to Geelong in 1990 Poole rediscovered his zest and passion and gave the club good service for three seasons which included a losing grand final against West Coast in 1992. He played 54 AFL games and kicked 34 goals with the Cats to add to the 99 appearances and 56 goals registered during his time at Richmond.
