Premiership season 2006 - Round 13 Review

Total Crowd 7,140 (Avg 1,785)

BLOODY WEATHER!!! Thanks to that silly cow upstairs, known to us all as Mother Nature, only one match getting close to 3,000 people out of the four SANFL matches this weekend. The rest never broke through 1,600! However, only one match was affected by the lousy conditions, reflected by the low scores at the end of the day. The rest were high scoring affairs and again it was South Adelaide who again blitzed the competition with their amazing accuracy.

Welcome to this week's edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

First we head up north to the Hamra Homes Oval, where the Bulldogs looked to inflict more misery on the luckless Bloods. But today wasn't going to be a straight out beating, in fact it was the exact opposite as both sides struggled to boot a goal. In the first term, it was just behinds being scored with a total of seven for the quarter, the Bloods in front by just three points. They both found the goal in the second quarter, the Dogs going up by one goal at half-time. Extremely silly errors on Central's part was the story of their day, but it was guys like Justin Westhoff and Matt Slade that kept the Bloods at arms length. The Dogs looked like they would get out of jail after a more accurate third quarter where they booted 3.4 to 1.1, they led by 21 points at three-quarter time. In the final quarter, the Bloods started to reel in their opponent, it was unfortunate that two conceded behinds to Centrals -- their only score for the final term -- probably contributed to West's loss by eight points. Slade was named best for Centrals, while West goalsneak Ben Haynes was also best afield.

Over at Prospect Oval, a more inspiring contest was being played out between the Roosters and the Tigers in the ABC Match of the Round. The Tigers were in danger of dropping out of the top five and their recent matches haven't been overly impressive. The Roosters were, on the other hand, on top of the league and having a laugh. The home side could have been more accurate in the first term, but were up by 16 points at quarter time. In the second term, despite heavy pressure from the visitors, the Roosters extended that lead to four goals after adding 4.4 to Glenelg's 3.2. After the long break, the Roosters just slapped the Tigers aside, in the third term they scored 5.2 to one solitary goal to be up by 50 points going into the final change. The Roosters relaxed it a little in the final term, it was the only quarter where the Tigers outscored North 4.4 to 3.3. But the damage was done, the Roosters celebrating their 43 point win. Scott Bamford was best for North and Justin McConnell was named best for Glenelg.

Down the coast at Noarlunga, where the cold weather would have had more bite to it, the Panthers played host to the Double Blues. Those expecting the weather to have an impact were going to be sorely mistaken, as once again the might of the Panthers was shown in full force in similar style to what they did to Port Adelaide. They began proceedings by booting 9.1 to Sturt's 1.2 in the first term, up by 47 points at quarter time. The Blues were just helpless to halt the South Adelaide onslaught, again only scoring 1.2 while the Panthers went about their merry and destructive way, scoring 6.2 in the second term to be up by 77 points at half time. Nothing much changed for the rest of the day. When play resumed for the second half, the Panthers had another six goal haul up their sleeve, Sturt managing 3.4 to be down by 91 points at three quarter time. It was basically a shootout in the last term, both sides bagging five goals, as South again sent a brutal message to rest of the competition with their 15-goal win. Damian Cupido really proved his worth that day, bagging best afield honours and 11 goals. Ben Colreavy was Sturt's only shining light for the day.

In the closing contest of Round 13, South Australia's two traditional footballing rivals locked horns at Alberton as the Magpies and Redlegs took to the field. Three rounds on the trot saw the Magpies slowly drop down the top five after three straight losses. Norwood weren't going very well either... one losing streak was about to stop. Port took the early initiative and took a 17 point lead at quarter time. An early second quarter scare by the Redlegs saw them draw to within nine points of the Magpies, but that was where Norwood's influtence on the match stopped. Both sides managed three goals in that quarter, Port still up by 15 points. After the long break, the 'Pies tossed aside the visitors, keeping them to 1.1 while bagging 7.3 for themselves to be up by 53 points at three-quarter time. Norwood's lousy skills stuffed them up, an opinion reflected by their coach, and the home side made them hurt pretty much every time. A 5.2 to 4.1 final term saw the Maggies home by 10 goals. Daniel Elstone got best afield votes for Port, while Norwood voted in Gavin Hughes as their best.
