PEGS

Formed in 1968, Old Essendon Grammarians participated in a number of different competitions between then and 1984, including the VAFA (1970-71), Essendon District Football League (1972-82) and Footscray District Football League (1983). During this time the club developed a winning culture, as evidenced by its procuring  of two senior grade premierships, one in the EDFL’s C Grade in 1976, and the other in 1983 in the A3 Section of the FDFL.

In 1984 the club returned to the VAFA where it has remained since, adding two further senior grade flags to its tally. The first of these arrived in 1986 in F Section, and entailed a 17.11 (113) to 11.15 (81) grand final defeat of UHSOB. The club’s reserves team went top the same year. In 1996 the side won the E East Section grand final against Williamstown CYMS, an achievement which has been a springboard to a steady ascent through the grades, albeit without any further senior grade premierships as yet.

Under the coaching of former Essendon, Brisbane and North Melbourne player David Calthorpe, Old Essendon Grammarians enjoyed a solid season in 2006, finishing fourth in B Section, before improving to third in 2007, which equalled the side’s best ever finish. The 2008 season brought promotion to A Section as runners-up but the club’s stay at the top level was brief as it finished last in 2009 after managing just 3 wins from 18 matches for the year.

Prior to the commencement of the 2012 season the club formally adopted the name of PEGS (Penleigh and Essendon Grammarians Football Club). A member of Premier C at this point the Bombers went on to suffer relegation to Division One at the end of the 2015 season. In 2016 they performed well, getting as far as the Division One preliminary final which they lost to Old Geelong by 40 points. A year later they made complete amends by not only qualifying for the grand final but overcoming warm pre-match favourites St. Mary's Salesian by 13 points, 15.14 (104) to 14.7 (91). Promoted to Premier C as a consequence of this triumph PEGS found the going tough but still managed to finish eighth, thereby avoiding relegation back to Division One.
