Border Walwa
Formed in late 1960 by means of a merger between the Border United and Walwa Football Clubs, the Magpies have competed in the Upper Murray Football League since their inception. They qualified for a grand final in their second season, but lost by 15 points to Federal. A year later they triumphed on grand final day against Cudgewa by 14 points.
The Magpies were particularly strong during the 1990s, contesting nine out of ten senior grade grand finals for half a dozen wins. The victories were attained in two sets of three. Between 1990 and 1992 they overcame the challenges of Corryong by margins of 64 and 74 points and Federal in a low scoring affair by 28 points. Then between 1996 and 1998 they accounted for Corryong by 8 goals, Cudgewa by 29 points, and Tumbarumba by a single straight kick. They reached another grand final in 2002 but lost heavily to Corryong. After struggling for several years the Magpies re-emerged as a force in 2009 and 2010 but despite performing strongly during the home and away series they failed to translate this into premiership success. More recently, they have tended to struggle, although they did manage to qualify for the finals in 2017 when they ultimately finished third. A year later, however, they endured a season long battle to avoid the wooden spoon which in the end they managed by winning 2 matches compared to 1 by bottom club Tumbarumba.
The club has been in recess since February 2020, owing to the devastation from that summer's bushfire season as well as a dwindling local population.
