Tyntynder

Tyntynder is one of two Swan Hill-based clubs in the Central Murray Football League. It boasts a proud tradition, and an enviable record, having claimed no fewer than thirty-seven premierships at all levels since the second world war. Thirteen of these flags were claimed in senior grade, commencing in 1947 when Woorinen was downed in the grand final by 29 points, 17.15 (117) to 13.10 (88).

The seniors contested three grand finals during the 1950s and won them all quite comfortably, against Swan Hill in 1955, and Lake Boga in 1958 and 1959. By contrast, the 1960s produced just one unsuccessful grand final appearance, against Lalbert in 1964.

Woorinen stood in the Bulldogs’ way in both of their grand finals of the 1970s, with the ledger being squared. Tyntynder scraped home by 4 points in 1973, and the Tigers by 11 points four years later.

Tyntynder was far and away the Mid Murray Football League’s pre-eminent club during the 1980s with the seniors contesting nine out of ten grand finals for the decade, and winning five of them. Moreover, all five flags were won convincingly.

When the MMFL merged with the Northern and Echuca Football League in 1997 the Bulldogs were quick to lay down the gauntlet in the resultant competition, the Central Murray Football League. In 1997 and 1998 both the seniors and reserves went top, with the seniors securing a noteworthy hat-trick of premierships in 1998. The Bulldogs’ tally of three senior flags remains a competition record. Meanwhile, the reserves went on to add further premierships in 2002 and 2006, giving them four in all, which is also a competition high.

So far, the twenty-first century has been much less noteworthy with the side often struggling, although they did manage to qualify for the finals in 2013 when they finished fourth. They came close to duplicating this feat in 2017 when they missed out only on percentage. By contrast, the 2018 season was rather dismal as they finished ninth of eleven teams.
