Match Report

A POOR GAME

MELBOURNE'S SECOND VICTORY

The only interest attached to the second meeting of the Melbourne and University team lay in the possibility of the students at last winning a game. As it turned out, they never looked likely winners. Melbourne played indifferently, but University were much worse. When the umpires came out there were 75 spectators and 4 policemen in the outer ground, where one of the big stands held a solitary spectator. The reserve and grandstands were a little better patronised. Melbourne tried Fraser, from Kyneton, and also included Quinn and Lowell. Roy Park reappeared for University in the place of Schrader, while Doig replaced Heatley. The game calls for little description. It opened and finished tamely, and was listless and spiritless throughout.

1sr Quarter

The first quarter was fairly even, the forwards on both sides missing good opportunities. Evans and Brunier scored goals for Melbourne, while Marks kicked one for University. At quarter-time Melbourne led by 6 points. Scores:—Melbourne, 2 goals 4 behinds University, 1 goals 4 behinds.

2nd Quarter

Shortly after the second quarter began Park aroused the first real applause of the day by snapping University's second goal. Evans got Melbourne's third big point through Woods, the University defender, running out and missing a dribbling shot. Park again made the scores equal with a good angle goal, but Best, marking from Fraser, shortly afterwards added Melbourne's fourth. Bacquie, who till then had been the best man on the ground, was lamed in a collision, and had to go forward for the rest of the day. He was able, however, to punt fifth goal for the Red Legs, after some fine work by Allan, Trahair, and McDonald. Best got the sixth before the half-time interval came, with the scores:—Melbourne, 6 goals 7 behinds; University, 3 goals 6 behinds.

3rd Quarter

The football continued to be indifferent in the second half. Hendrie got Melbourne's seventh goal with a snap from a crush close in. Melbourne players were spoiling each other all through the match, and in this term two of them collided so violently that one—McDonald—was knocked out for some minutes. University attacked for a time but gained nothing, whereas a sudden onslaught by Melbourne resulted in Evans putting on another goal. After Park bad missed an easy shot. Trahair and McKenzie raced the ball up to Best, who added six more points to the Melbourne total. Park found the right opening just before the bell went with the scores:—Melbourne 9 goals 7 behinds; University, 4 goals 8 behinds.

4th Quarter

The last term was a little brighter. Park ran right into goal, but his hurried shot went astray. He again missed a little later. Atkins and Hartkopf added goals for the students, while McDonald and Hendrie increased Melbourne's goals tally to 11. Melbourne ran out easy winners by 27 points, the final scores being:—

MELBOURNE, 11 goals 9 behinds (75 points).
UNIVERSITY, 6 goals 12 behinds (48 points).

For the winners, Bacquie roved in fine style until hurt. Trahair and McKenzie on the centre wings were too fast and too clever for their opponents. Evans (3 goals), Best (3 goals), McDonald, Quinn, Monk, and Hendrie were all very useful. Fraser showed some promise, but Lilley had an off day.

For University Brake played a great game in the ruck, but he had poor support. Hartkopf did well in the last quarter only. Park, Atkins, Seelenmeyer, and Kelly were the best of the others. Woods, the State full-back, injured his ankle and was very lame at the finish.
