Match Report

This was a game that followed the script, almost to the letter. The lowly Brisbane Lions put in a strong first quarter against the highly-fancied West Coast, before the Eagles showed their strength in the second term, kicking seven goals to one to set up a six-goal half-time lead before holding Brisbane at bay in the second half to record a comfortable 49-point win. For the Lions, it was an all-too-familiar tale, as they showed an ability to mix it with a good side for a brief time, before being blown away.

West Coast jumped to an early seven-point lead after a Jamie Cripps behind was followed by a fine running goal fro Mark LeCras. Brisbane responded with a good mark and long goal from Josh Walker, returning from a month in the NEAFL, but goals from both Cripps and LeCras had the Eagles in front and looking threatening early in time on. But the Lions hit their straps late in the term and three majors in a row via Josh Schache, Lewis Taylor and Pearce Hanley to take a five-point lead. Former Giant and Don Jonathan Giles answered with a late goal in his first game for the Eagles, who took a one-point lead into the first break.

Unfortunately for Brisbane, it took only three minutes in the second quarter for the Eagles to break the game apart and set up a big win. Goals to Josh Kennedy, Chris Masten and Kennedy again saw them jump out to a 20-point lead and the Lions never recovered. Pearce Hanley did respond with a goal at the 11-minute mark but that was Brisbane's only goal for the term and West Coast added a further four majors over the next 20 minutes to lead by six goals at the long break.

The Eagles extended the margin to 42 points with the first goal of the third quarter via Kennedy at the five-minute mark and, while the Lions kicked majors through Mitch Robinson and Walker over the next 18 minutes and held West Coast goalless, the Eagles closed out the quarter with goals to Luke Shuey and Jack Darling to lead by a commanding 45 points at the last change of ends.

A good mark and goal to Josh Schache cut the margin to 39 points in the first minute of the final term, but any thoughts of a final-term fightback were dispelled with goals to LeCras, Elliot Yeo, Jack Darling, Kennedy and Darling again as the Eagles took a 78-point lead into the time-on period. The Lions hit back to record four of the last five majors of the match but there was no disguising the fact that these were 'junk time' goals and West Coast's final winning margin of 49 points probably flattered the Lions.

LeCras played a fine game for the Eagles, with 15 disposals, four goals and five tackles. For Brisbane, Mitch Robinson's 39 touches, six tackles and a goal put him amongst his side's best.

West Coast will have a bye in round 12 before hosting bottom side Essendon on Thursday week, while Brisbane will travel to the MCG this Saturday, looking for a more sustained effort against Richmond.
