After failing to make the grade at Collingwood Brad Boyd crossed to Fitzroy in 1992 and quickly proved he was a footballer of real talent. He was also quite versatile, playing mostly as a ruck-rover but also, on occasion, as a half back flanker and centre half forward. A Victorian state of origin representative in 1995 and a Lions best and fairest winner the same year, he holds the distinction of being the last ever Fitzroy Football Club captain, a role he undertook in 1995 and 1996.

The 1997 season saw Boyd at Brisbane but he struggled with injuries and managed just 15 games and eight goals before retiring in 1999. The Fitzroy phase of his career had seen him register 70 AFL games and 49 goals.
