Alf Bushby was an extraordinarily versatile and highly skilled player who was allegedly “recognised as the finest player in South Australia, and second only to A.J. Thurgood of Essendon, Victoria, as the champion footballer of Australia”¹. Always a threat near goal, Bushby topped the SAFA goal kicking list with 25 goals in 1887.
Bushby began his senior career with Port Adelaide in the mid-1880s, where his brother William was already a leading player. He later crossed to South Adelaide where he played his best football during a golden age for that club's fortunes.
