The son of former Claremont and St Kilda footballer John McIntosh, Ashley McIntosh boasted a similar skill-set in that his distribution of the ball was impeccable and he was superb overhead. Capable of playing in any key position, he used his large (191cm, 98kg) frame to good effect in physical contests, but was also extremely fleet of foot. On occasion he would successfully take on rucking duties, but he probably produced his best football in the key defensive positions.
After commencing his career in 1990 with Claremont in the WASFL he progressed to the AFL with West Coast the following year. A key member of the Eagles’ 1992 and 1994 flag-winning combinations, he won a club best and fairest award in 1998, and earned AFL All Australian selection the same year. Towards the end of his career he was beset by injury problems which eventually forced his retirement in 2003 after 242 AFL games and 108 goals. He also played a dozen WA(S)FL games for Claremont.
