Essendon's Geoff Pryor was a top quality defender who was strong overhead and boasted plenty of pace. In 1965, his debut season, he was one of the best players afield as the Bombers overcame St Kilda in the grand final. Insatiably hard running, he kept close to his direct opponent and was renowned for his ability to keep the game's best forwards quiet. His kicking style was awkward but effective and he played successfully at centre half back and on a half back flank before developing into one of the best full backs in the league. Runner-up in Essendon's best and fairest on three occasions he played 137 VFL games and kicked 8 goals for the club from 1965 to 1970 and in 1973 and 1974. He missed the 1971 and 1972 seasons whilst overseas on business.
