Details of Congupna’s early history are sketchy but it is known that the club competed for a time during the 1890s and early 1900s in the Goulburn Valley Football Association. No premierships were won, but in 1903 Congupna reached the grand final, losing to Drumanure by 6 goals.

After world war two the club’s history becomes clearer. As a member of the Kyabram District Football Association a premiership was captured in 1956, and there was also a losing grand final appearance four years later. In 1962 Congupna commenced in the Benalla Tungamah Football League reaching the grand final in each of its first three seasons. The 1962 clash with Dookie was lost, but in 1963 and 1964 the side scored wins against Mulwala and Tungamah respectively. In 1967 the name of the competition was changed to the Tungamah Football League, with Congupna achieving further premiership victories in 1971, 1978, 1991 and 1993.

Distinctively nicknamed ‘The Road’, Congupna has since 1997 competed in the Murray Football League, with a losing grand final against Cobram in 1998 the closest the club has come to procuring a senior grade flag. Recent seasons have, in the main, been somewhat disappointing with the side coming ninth in 2014,11th in 2015, 12th and last after losing all 18 matches for the year in 2016, and 11th in both 2017 and 2018. The 2019 season brought significant improvement as The Road qualified for the finals and got as far as a losing preliminary final clash with eventual premiers Nathalia.
