"At the end of the 1908 season, VFL premier Carlton then challenged West to a play off for the ‘Championship of the Commonwealth’, a challenge which West were quick to accept. The match took place at Adelaide Oval in front of a crowd of 13,000, most of whom would have been surprised to see West win, let alone so emphatically. Final scores were West Adelaide 12.9 (81) to Carlton 7.10 (52) ... "
