Bill Bowe was a tough defender who normally played either in a back pocket or on a half back flank, although he could also pinch-hit on the forward lines. He joined Melbourne from the Camberwell-based Waterloo Football Club in 1900, and after making just one appearance in his debut season went on to become a mainstay of the side for the ensuing five campaigns, ultimately playing a total of 74 VFL games and kicking three goals.
