Useful wingman though he was, Colin Laidlaw found it difficult to hold down a regular spot in Essendon’s strong line-up. Between 1919 and 1923 he played 42 VFL games for the Same Old and scored 16 goals. After not being included in the team for the 1923 grand final clash with Fitzroy he sought, and was granted, a clearance to VFA side Footscray, whom he helped to the 1924 premiership. He continued with the Tricolours after their admission to the VFL in 1925, and went on to add 25 games and one goal to his respective career tallies over the course of a two season stint.
