After playing seconds football in 1955 Dennis Jones made his senior league debut for Melbourne the following year. A powerfully built defender and occasional ruckman, he could never really be classed as an automatic choice for the seniors, but he did play in a premiership side in 1959. From 1956 to 1960 and in 1962 he played 59 VFL games for the Demons and scored four goals. A broken and dislocated wrist restricted him to reserves football in 1961.
In 1963 Jones joined VFA second division side Prahran as captain-coach. He spent a couple of seasons with the Two Blues, playing nine games. The 1965 season found Jones at Waverley, a VFA first division outfit, but he played just one game before bringing the curtain down on his playing career.
As a coach, Dennis Jones experienced mixed fortunes at Central District, West Perth and Melbourne.
