John Caulfield worked his way up from the fourths at Richmond before making his senior debut in 1963. He played nine games that year but, after playing only reserves football in 1964, he transferred to VFA first division side Port Melbourne. A half back and ruck-rover, he was highly successful during his time with the Borough, winning a best and fairest award in 1965 and lining up at centre half back in the following year’s grand final-winning team. He also represented the VFA at the 1966 Hobart carnival. From 1965 to 1971 he played 118 games and scored 14 goals for Port, captaining the side in his last three seasons. His next port of call was Sydney club Western Suburbs where he played from 1972 to 1976, enjoying premiership success on three occasions. He was a regular New South Wales interstate player and captained his club, the Magpies, in 1974-5-6.
