Richmond’s Les Jones was a powerfully built follower who provided sterling support in the ruck to Jack Dyer. He played in the 1944 VFL grand final in only his third game but could not prevent a shock loss to Fitzroy. In 1944 and from 1946 to 1949 he played 59 games and scored 23 goals, totals which would probably have been somewhat higher were it not for his army commitments. He was the brother of Melbourne’s Dennis Jones.
