Sam Snell joined St Kilda from Barooga and quickly developed into a useful key defender manifesting considerable purpose and skill. From 1936 to 1941 and in 1944-5 he played 93 VFL games and booted 21 goals. All the goals came in his final season, when he spent a fair amount of time up forward. He was the club’s joint top goal kicker for the year. For most of 1941 and the whole of 1942-3 his work as a police constable precluded his playing league football.
