In 1903 Ted Wade commenced his senior playing career with Richmond in the VFA for whom his 16 appearances for the season included the grand final loss to North Melbourne. The 1904 season found him at Melbourne, but he found it hard to break into the side and played just once for the year. Two seasons later he embarked on a second stab at VFL football when he joined South Melbourne. Over the course of a five season stint he proved himself an able and highly versatile player. He was a centreman in the 1907 grand final loss to Carlton and played in the back pocket, and was one of the best players afield, when the result was reversed in the 1909 flag decider. From 1906 to 1910 Wade played 60 VFL games for South and booted three goals. After leaving the VFL he took on the role of captain of the Bairnsdale Football Club.
